Tuning the Signal: Sound and Your Arousal

Tier one (defaults, friction, the phone) was the strong, general stuff.

Now we shift into the sensory layer, where the evidence gets more individual and the honesty has to do more work, and sound is the perfect place to start, because it's the one environmental lever that may be specifically yours. Here's the finding that makes it interesting: in a controlled study, adding auditory white noise improved cognitive performance in children with ADHD, while it impaired the kids without ADHD. That's not the usual "this helps everyone a little" result; it's a genuine crossover, where the same input helps one brain and hurts another. The theory behind it is the third major model of ADHD, not a deficit of executive function or of reward, but of arousal state. The idea (the Moderate Brain Arousal model, and the older optimal-stimulation theory it grows from) is that a dopamine-lean brain sits under-aroused, with a poorer internal signal-to-noise ratio, which reframes a lot of "ADHD behavior" as functional self-stimulation: the foot-tapping, the music, the need for a podcast running while you clean aren't failures of focus, they're your brain reaching for the stimulation it needs to come online. On that model, adding external noise tops you up to where a quieter brain already sits. A meta-analysis of around 13 studies in kids with attention difficulties found small-to-medium benefits from white noise on cognitive performance, and the intervention is, refreshingly, simple, fast-acting, free, and side-effect-free. Now the honesty, and this is the whole point of the lesson: the benefit has reasonable support, but the mechanism is contested. The original "stochastic resonance" explanation (that random noise specifically tops up a noisy-signal system) took a real hit in 2024, when an EEG study found that both pink noise and a plain, non-random tone reduced neural noise in adults with elevated ADHD traits, which isn't what the random-noise theory predicts. So the careful read is: something about auditory input seems to help some ADHD brains (strongest for the inattentive presentation), but why, and which sound, is unsettled. That's not a reason to skip it, it's free and harmless, it's a reason to stop treating it as a prescription and start treating it as a self-test. Don't adopt "white noise helps ADHD" as an article of faith and then feel like a failure when lo-fi beats annoy you. The only data that matters is yours: try it, measure it, keep it if it works for you. This is the model for all of tier two, a plausible, cheap lever, run as an experiment on a sample size of one.
