The Destination: A Habit Is Regulation on Autopilot

Let's be exact about what a habit actually is, because the everyday meaning ("a thing you do a lot") hides the mechanism that makes it the most powerful carrier in the course.
A habit is a context, response association: a stable cue gets wired directly to a behavior, so that when the cue shows up, the behavior fires, bypassing deliberation entirely. You don't decide. You don't weigh it. The environment pulls the trigger and the action runs. That's the definition that matters, because look at what it removes from the loop: it removes you, specifically, it removes the parts of you that ADHD makes unreliable. No remembering required (the cue remembers). No motivation required (the association doesn't care how you feel). No deciding required (deliberation is exactly what gets bypassed). Once a behavior is genuinely habitual, it diminishes its reliance on the original goal or motivation that started it, it keeps running even when the motivation that built it has completely worn off, even when your attention is somewhere else. Sit with that, because it's the answer to Module 7's cliffhanger: the incentive engine paid your brain to start; the habit is what takes over so you don't have to keep paying. There's a real neural version of this, and it's worth knowing because it makes the whole thing concrete rather than motivational. As a behavior becomes automatic, control of it physically shifts inside the brain, from the circuitry that runs goal-directed, "I'm doing this on purpose" action over to the circuitry that runs automatic, cued routines (in the lab: from the dorsomedial to the dorsolateral striatum). And the routine gets "chunked", the whole sequence (wake → shoes → out the door) compresses into a single fired unit instead of a string of separate decisions you have to power through one at a time. That chunking is why an automatic behavior feels effortless: your brain isn't running ten little executive-function gates, it's running one stored program. This is external homeostasis at the level of your own neurons: the job that effortful self-regulation kept fumbling gets handed to a system that doesn't fumble, because it isn't using effort at all. So the target of this module isn't "do the behavior more." It's narrower and more powerful: take one behavior you care about and build the cue→behavior wire until the environment runs it for you. Everything else here, the timeline, the cliff, the lapse plan, is in service of getting one behavior across that line.
