Friction Is a Tool: Raise the Cost, Then Build the Easy Exit

Lesson 9.1 was about making the right thing easy.

This is the other half: making the wrong thing just hard enough to break the autopilot. The two together are the whole of choice architecture, lower the friction on what you want, raise it on what you don't, and the slope of the room does the rest. Friction works because most impulsive behavior isn't a considered choice you'd defend, it's a frictionless reflex: the hand reaches for the phone before the brain is even consulted. Insert one small obstacle and you give the deliberate part of your brain a half-second to actually get a vote. Now here's the study that should change how you do this, because it measured the thing precisely and the result is not what most people assume. Researchers deployed an app that, when you tried to open a target app (Instagram, TikTok, whatever you'd flagged), threw up a brief pop-up: a short waiting moment, a little "do you really want to?" message, and, crucially, a one-touch option to just close it and walk away. Over six weeks with 280 people, that pop-up led users to abandon about 36% of the apps they had just tried to open, over a third of the time, they bailed on an app they had actively reached for one second earlier. Opening attempts dropped 37%, and actual use fell 57%. But here's the part that matters most for how you build your own friction: a preregistered follow-up found that the easy one-touch exit did more of the work than the waiting time did. Sit with that, because it inverts the usual advice. We tend to think the barrier is the active ingredient, make it annoying, add a delay, lock it behind a timer. The data says the bigger lever was giving people a graceful, frictionless way to not do the thing at the exact moment they were reconsidering. The wait creates the pause; the easy exit is what they take when the pause makes them reconsider. So when you design friction, don't just build a wall, build the wall and a wide-open door marked "leave." Delete the app and you have to re-download it to use it (a wall), but also leave the book on the pillow so the easy alternative is right there (the door). Log out of the account so getting back in is a hassle (wall), and set the phone to charge in another room so reaching for it means standing up (door). Take the saved card off the shopping site (wall), and the "just don't buy it" path is now the path of least resistance (door). The honest caveat, kept in because it's load-bearing: this effect fades. In that same study the abandonment rate started around 43% in week one and drifted down to about 32-34% by week six, the novelty of the friction wore off, exactly like the week-three cliff predicted in Module 8. Which tells you how to use friction correctly: it's not a one-time install, it's a thing you refresh and re-up when it goes stale, change the obstacle, add a new one, rotate it. Friction is a tool you maintain, not a trap you set once and trust forever.
