Catch Yourself at the Decision Point: Just-in-Time Prompts

There's a difference between learning on Sunday that you wasted Tuesday, and getting a nudge Tuesday at 2pm, in the moment you're about to drift. The first is hindsight; the second is intervention at the point of performance, and the point of performance is exactly where Barkley says the regulation has to happen.

This is the idea behind just-in-time prompts: instead of (or alongside) reviewing your data after the fact, the system catches you at the decision point, the moment the behavior is live and a small input could tip it. The screen-time prompt that interrupts as you open the app (Module 9's friction). The reminder that fires when you arrive at the cue, not an hour before. The check-in that pings during your stated focus block to ask "still on task?" The appeal for an ADHD brain is obvious: your weak link is the in-the-moment decision, so a prompt delivered into that moment is aimed precisely at the gap, it doesn't ask you to have remembered in advance or to review diligently later, it shows up exactly when and where the regulation is needed. The formal version of this, "just-in-time adaptive interventions", is a whole design framework: identify the decision points, the moments you're most reachable, and deliver tailored support right then. It's promising, and it's the natural endpoint of making behavior visible: not just a mirror you check, but a mirror that taps you on the shoulder. But here's where the honesty has to come in, because this field is younger than its hype. The just-in-time tailoring layer, the smart, context-aware, "right support at the right moment" promise, is mostly still at the feasibility-and-acceptability stage. Reviews find its effectiveness varies by behavior and isn't consistently better than simpler interventions, study quality is often weak, and, directly relevant to you, ADHD-specific just-in-time interventions are essentially not yet in the strong-evidence literature. So I'm not going to sell you a smart-prompting system as proven. What is well-grounded is the simpler core underneath it: a prompt delivered at the decision point (the friction prompt from M9, the cued reminder from M6) helps because it lands at the point of performance, and the monitoring it's built on (12.2) has real support. So use the principle, not the marketing: set up one simple in-the-moment prompt aimed at your highest-leverage decision point, treat it as a personal experiment, and don't mistake an elaborate adaptive-AI-coach for something the evidence has actually validated for ADHD. The decision point is the right target. The fancy version just isn't proven yet.
